Parl. speaker: Better to have elections in summer than to not have them at all

Croatian Parliament Speaker Gordan Jandrokovic said on Wednesday it was better to have the election in the first half of the summer, otherwise Croatia was risking not having the election at all due to a possible new wave of the coronavirus pandemic.

Talking to the RTL commercial television, Jandrokovic said that there was a ban on public assembly involving more than 10 people until May 11.

"This is the date when the third round of easing (COVID-19) restrictions will be launched and we will monitor the number of the infected. Should it remain at the current level, then I believe there are realistic and fair conditions to launch an election campaign," Jandrokovic said.

He explained that no decision will be made until the epidemiological situation allows it.

Jandrokovic said that in order to hold the election, two conditions must be met - the election must be held within the constitutional deadline and the epidemiological situation must allow, with reasonable restrictions, the election to be democratic, legal and legitimate.

Jandrokovic said that the leading opposition Social Democratic Party (SDP) was aggressively trying to avoid the election because it feared the election outcome.

The final decision will be made by the President of the Republic, Jandrokovic said, warning that the election must be called between 30 and 60 days after the parliament is dissolved.
